Currently nestled away in the Chef’s Table by BeauxJax, Dessert Shop Sugar Sheaux has already been making a big debut with the Hurricane Alley Live patrons!
Starting as a custom order cake pick-up spot, Sugar Sheaux is set to open its doors as an onsite dessert shop and bakery in mid April.
Sugar Sheaux’s daily storefront availability will include things like cupcakes, cookies, muffins, cinnamon rolls, fresh cake slices, fresh cheesecake slices, cake pops, brownies, and cake cups.
Occasional treats will include customizable cookie cakes, ready-to-grab decorated cakes for last minute celebrations, dessert boards (think charcuterie boards, but with sweets) and of course, seasonal favorites such as King Cake during Mardi Gras season. Pies and family size desserts during Thanksgiving and Christmas will be available. And, other holiday themed goodies and custom made cakes for celebrations will also be offered.
Owners Kacie and Phillip Shaw chose to open up their first store front in Bossier’s EastBank District because it feels like their second home.
“My husband and I have known Beau and Peanut for quite some time and after BeauxJax opened, we decided to move our jobs to BeauxJax. My husband is a manager there and I was a bartender. Once Chef’s Table by BeauxJax opened, Beau and Peanut approached me about using the kitchen to expand my baking and in January of 2021, Sugar Sheaux became a legal business name. I prayed for wisdom, guidance and bigger opportunities. By the middle of the year, I knew that New Year’s would be my last bartending shift, as my orders were steadily coming in more frequently (and a lot sooner than I expected). Once again, I prayed for an opportunity to grow my business and eventually be able to grow into a store front location, which hopefully would be in the EastBank District, as my husband and I already thought of it as our second home where we were surrounded by both old friends and new friends from the many other businesses along the EastBank District. I was thinking that it would take a couple of years and I didn’t want to be too impatient. However, in January of 2022, Beau and Peanut approached me again about utilizing the space in between BeauxJax and Bayou Ax Throwing Company. As quickly as this journey has happened, it all feels so right and I feel like I am exactly where I’m supposed to be. So, I would say I didn’t choose it but by the grace of God and our wonderful friends, it actually chose me. My husband and I feel so blessed to be able to set up in the EastBank,” Shaw said.
So, what makes Sugar Sheaux stand out from the other dessert shops in town? Shaw says, using buttercream and not fondant for all of her decorations.
“I started Sugar Sheaux by really advertising custom cakes, sugar cookies and cupcakes using ALL buttercream for all decorations. I don’t use any fondant of any kind. This helps me stand out since a lot of people don’t care for the taste of fondant anyway. I have experience with fondant and by using fondant, it is a simpler (and sometimes sharper) way to make cake decorations. I still salute those who do use fondant, but it usually gets scraped to the side by people eating the cake. By using all buttercream, it’s a bit more challenging and it helps to have a steady hand, an eye for art and a creative mind. And, I love being able to be “hands on” and crafty.”
Shaw went on to say “I want to say thank you to Beau and Peanut for believing in me, seeing my hard driven potential and for allowing me this opportunity. Also, thank you to Brian who never settled for a less than deserved compliment and pushed me to do my best by reminding me that if this didn’t work out, I would be back bartending under his authority. “And, thank you to my husband Phillip. None of this would have even started if it weren’t for him believing in me, constantly handing out my business cards, not complaining when I would spend x amount on baking equipment. I also want to thank my husband for not complaining when I would stay up until 5 in the morning when I was first getting started. Back then, I would have every light in the house on trying to finish a cake design when he had to be at work by 9 am He is also the one who bought me my first KitchenAid stand mixer years ago. I guess he always saw this potential in me,” Shaw concluded.
