If you’ve ever considered owning a Marriott co-branded credit card, now might be a good time to pounce. Both Chase and American Express recently announced new cardholder offers that are some of the best we have seen.

The Marriott portfolio of properties is one of the largest in the world and encompasses over 30 brands and 7,000 properties worldwide. Chances are, wherever you’re going you’re likely to find a hotel under the Marriott umbrella. Properties range from budget-minded Four Points and Courtyard hotels to swank Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis lodging.

According to a recent American Express Global Travel Trends survey, 86% of respondents expect to spend more or the same on travel in 2022 compared to a typical year before the pandemic. With the new welcome bonuses on several Marriott co-branded cards, you could be well on your way to hotel night awards just by meeting the minimum spending requirements.

Why You Might Want Bonvoy Rewards

The Marriott Bonvoy program may have some quirks (getting “Bonvoyed” is a thing) but for those who want to amass award nights quickly and want to work towards elite status with the chain, owning a Marriott credit card is a handy way to do so .

Another potentially valuable use of Marriott Bonvoy points is transferring them to Marriott’s airline partners. There are more than 40 airline partners and for nearly all of them, you can transfer your points to airline miles at a 3:1 ratio. In other words, 30,000 Bonvoy points can be turned into 10,000 airline miles with a participating airline partner. Marriott adds in an extra 5,000 miles boost for every 60,000 points you transfer to airline miles so 60,000 points transfers to 25,000 miles.

As a Marriott credit cardholder, you’ll also get 15 Elite Night credits, which means you’ll get automatic Silver status in the Bonvoy program. This status comes with a 10% bonus on stays, priority late checkout and free Wi-Fi, among other perks.

You can leapfrog your way to Gold Status, which includes a 25% points bonus and 2 pm late checkout if you own both a consumer Marriott credit card and a Marriott small business credit card. This is the only scenario where you can combine Elite Night credits for a total of 30 nights. You cannot combine the 15 Elite Night credits between two consumer cards.

Bottom Line

If you were already tempted to apply for and are eligible for one of these cards, these new welcome bonuses, especially on the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless and the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express cards can give you a leg-up on both a pile of points and elite status in the Bonvoy program. But if you rarely travel, these cards won’t make sense for you to hold long-term. You’d be better off with a card that earns cash-back so you can use your rewards any way you’d like, hotels or otherwise.
