Former city superintendent takes business manager post

ELLSWORTH — Dan Higgins, who stepped down as superintendent for city schools on Dec. 14, 2021, is now working for the Mt. Blue Regional School District. He had notified the Ellsworth School Board of his resignation on Dec. 13.

Higgins started his position as business manager for the 2,300-student district on Jan. 31, Superintendent Chris Elkington confirmed. Elkington is a former superintendent for Deer Isle-Stonington CSD 13 who left in July 2021 to take the Mt. Blue position.

“In January, our business manager plans changed, and I took a chance on seeing if Dan wanted a different challenge,” Elkington said. “Dan said based on present family needs, he would think about the opportunity with his wife. The rest is history.”

In his resignation letter from the Ellsworth schools, Higgins had cited the need to “focus on personal and family health, wellness and medical issues that require my immediate attention.”

“While my resignation was necessary to permit me time to focus immediate attention on personal and family health, wellness and medical issues, the intent was for me to return to work at some point in the future,” Higgins told The American. “At the time, we did not know when that might be. Fortunately for [wife] Tammi and me, our family situation had improved to the point where it made sense for us to consider an appropriate opportunity should one present itself.”

As superintendents in Hancock County, Higgins and Elkington had worked together and have a “positive, professional relationship,” Higgins said. He added that Elkington is someone “with whom I share similar philosophies and beliefs about education.”

Higgins does not plan to move to the Farmington area, he noted, and also reaffirmed that leaving his Ellsworth role was the right decision for his family.

Elkington said Mt. Blue is “blessed” to have Higgins on board.

“Dan Higgins brings a depth of knowledge about finance, budget-building, education and Maine finance law that you would not find in many candidates … Ellsworth’s loss has brought RSU 9 [Mt. Blue Regional School District] an intelligent, hardworking, caring leader who I gained much knowledge from while working with him and others in Hancock County.”
