Despite concerns about the Omicron variant of Covid-19, travel between Germany and the United States is open. But vaccination and testing requirements make it imperative to prepare before you embark on your trip.

Furthermore, travel to Germany presents a Level 4—or very high—travel risk as classified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Travel to Germany and other Level 4 countries should, therefore, be avoided. The CDC bases risk determinations on data from the World Health Organization and other official sources, and metrics include cumulative new cases, testing rates and test-to-case ratios.

Requirements to Enter Germany from the US

The United States is currently considered by Germany to be an areas of virus variant or high risk area. As of Dec. 23, people over the age of six who are traveling from the US and entering Germany must present one of the following:

  • Proof of full vaccination
  • Proof of recovery from Covid-19 between 28 days and up to six months prior to arrival
  • Proof of urgent need for entry and a negative antigen or PCR test result within the prior 48 hours

You’re required to present this information to your airline and if requested by border officials when you arrive in Germany.

Proof of vaccination must be documented in German, English, French, Italian or Spanish. Physical and digital forms are accepted, but photographs of physical forms are not—a digital form must be issued by an official source.

If you’re entering Germany from a virus variant or high risk area or have visited one in the previous 10 days before arrival, you must carry a test, vaccination or certificate of recovery with you. Antigen rapid tests are not sufficient, and PCR tests must not be older than 48 hours at the time of scheduled departure.

Those who spent time in a high risk area also must register online before arriving and carry proof of registration with you when you arrive. You also need to quarantine for up to 14 days upon arrivaland there is no exception to quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated persons.

If you’re just transiting through Germany from a virus variant or high-risk area, you’re exempt from the registration requirement.

It’s important to keep in mind that the current situation is developing, and new restrictions could be put in place by the German government at any time. For more information on restrictions for US travelers entering Germany, visit the Germany Federal Foreign Office website.

Requirements to Enter the US from Germany

All passengers aged 2 and over are required to show proof of a negative Covid-19 test taken within one day of the departure of their flight to the United States.

Unlike the previous requirements which are allowed for a longer timetable for vaccinated travelers, this new requirement treats all passengers the same, regardless of vaccination status. As is currently the case, either a PCR or antigen test is still accepted as proof of being negative for Covid-19.

It is important to note that the test requirements include taking it within one calendar day and is not limited to within 24 hours of your departure. This means that passengers can take their test at any time during the day before their flight, no matter what time their flight departs.

Alternatively, passengers who are recently recovered from Covid-19 may provide documentation of their recovery. Accepted documentation includes a positive Covid-19 viral test result from within the 90 days prior to the flight’s departure, along with a letter from a licensed healthcare provider indicating the passenger is cleared to travel.

If you’re not a US citizen and don’t have immigration status in the US, you must provide proof of vaccination before boarding a flight to the United States.

Tests in Germany range in cost from around $20 to $35 for rapid tests, while PCR tests can cost more.
